Unbelievable

Chris H left this quote as a comment a few days back, and I'd love to hear more response to it:

"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door, and deny Him with their lifestyle. This is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

I'd like to see the context of the quote. On its face I've got a couple of disputes with it, but I'd be interested in what larger point the author is trying to make. Anyone have the source?

It is the prelude to "What if I stumble" by DC Talk but I believe Brennan Manning originally penned it.

I will say that the quote is in agreement with the feelings of a lot of the non-believers I know. It's a pretty frequent thing, when faith comes up as a topic around my non believing friends for the conversation to quickly turn to statements such as... most Christians, even in trying to get others to believe, manage to go against the teachings of Christ.

I don't know if I'd be so bold as to say it's the largest cause of atheism in the world... but it is definitely seen by non-believers and it definitely helps to distance them from the Truth that Christ would have them come to know.
