Greatest Hits Vol. I

I was cruising around the metacrtic site, looking at upcoming releases, when I came across the soon-to-be released Goo Goo Dolls album. The title of said album is "Greatest Hits Vol. I"

That may be one of the most optimistic uses of the phrase "Vol. I" that I have ever come across.

Haha! Maybe it's an EP. That way they can release three volumes.

Of course, "greatest hits" is sometime a misnomer since the band in question never actually had a hit. I prefer "best of."

Getting off topic a bit, I don't understand how some greatest hits collections leave out notable hits songs from artists' catalogs. And then there's the Essential series. Who's determining what's essential? For example, The Essential Billy Joel doesn't include "Pressure" or "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant!" Instead, it has two songs from his instrumental album. What?

I JUST HAD THIS CONVERSATION

I heard this album advertised in a movie theater and I said "There's more than one volume to the Goo Goo Dolls Greatest Hits? There's more than one song to the Goo Goo Dolls Greatest Hits?"

Weird.

Jason-

Putting a best of collection together is a fairly daunting experience. It seems to me that few bands/artists ever really pull it off. At best, it collects the best of the stuff you didn't want to buy entire albums to have.

Jeff Buckley's best of is a weird exception. It contains "Grace" in its entirety, as well as other tracks. Which is about right, but still weird.

I think the Essential collections that Sony puts out are selected by the artists themselves. Which explains the instrumental Billy Joel selections...only he would select those.

Do you have any idea how many tracks are on the GGD's Vol.1? Off the top of my head, I can think of about twelve songs that could be classified as "hits"--getting decent radio play.

As for Vol. 2, it might just have to be a collection of remixes of Vol. 1's songs.
